Washington, DC – House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) today demanded that White House officials give their statements regarding the Sestak-Romanoff job offers under oath.

During today’s White House Press Briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs again deflected questions regarding the White House’s attempt to manipulate the democratic election process by offering jobs to primary candidates in exchange for their withdrawal from contested races.  Gibbs claimed that the White House’s actions were consistent with the President’s role as the “Leader of the Democratic Party.”

Ranking Members Smith and Issa: “What Mr. Gibbs fails to understand is that the President is not just the Leader of the Democratic Party.  He’s the leader of the Country.  His political affiliation as a Democrat does not condone possible criminal conduct by Administration officials simply because it benefits the Democratic Party.  If the Administration has nothing to hide, why not answer our questions?  Why not provide Congress with documents, emails and phone records?

“The Administration’s continued silence only raises more questions.  In order to get to the truth, it’s clear that Administration officials and other involved parties must be interviewed under oath by a Special Counsel, the FBI or Congressional investigators.

“Since 2007, Judiciary Committee Democrats have interviewed more than 20 former Administration officials, including one just last week. Republicans have every right to do the same on behalf of the American people.

“It’s time now for Democrats in Congress to focus on a real scandal with real criminal implications for White House officials. If the Administration continues to stonewall Congress, then Congress must demand the transparency that President Obama promised, but refuses to make good on.”
